Developing a plan
During my Teaching Credential Program first semester, I had the opportunity to take a class with emphasis on CA. ELD STANDARD(S). Also I
was taught how to implement them in my lesson and how to add different strategies to facilitate the students' learning. In addition, every class member was asked to develop a plan to address an issue that we thought was blocking the communication between the EL students' families or was hindering the students' education. As a result, I developed a plan focused on further expanding the communication between EL students' parents and the school administration. I proposed an open line where EL students' parents can address their questions without fear to be deported or misunderstood because they do not speak the language.

What have you named as an issue?
What are your thoughts thus for about how to address the issue?
What idea do you have about implementing your plan?
One main issue among ELs. is that their parents do not have an open communication line with the school administration due to lack of proficiency in the English language, fear to be deported or not enough time to exchange information. Therefore, it would be suggested for the school administration to create a plan to reach these parents and make them feel part of the community. In order to have an open communication with these parents I suggest having a phone line where they can call and get answers from me right away regarding their children's academic development, meetings, and other activities.
The reason that I am suggesting an open phone line is that some parents can not afford to attend meetings for economical reasons and others are literal only in their own language meaning they do not know how to read and write so communicating in a verbal form will be something that many of Latino parents would prefer. Another issue is that some of them are illegal; therefore they do not feel comfortable living their work place or home. Others work long hours so the probabilities to attend meetings and school events are low in their priorities. Consequently having an open phone line will address the majority of the issues that impede these parents to participate in their children education.
Furthermore, the benefits for the parents and the school will be mutual because the students will be less likely to participate in wrong doings knowing that their parents are involved in the school decisions. Academically, there will be also an impact; parents will be able to discuss their concern and issues that are impacting their children’s academic development and behavior. Conversely, the parents will be pleased to count on the support of the school administration and to be able to communicate in their own language. Regarding the time and the days that this service will be available is up to the administration. My suggestion is that this phone line should be open to address parent’s concerns a couple of hours a day, probably during and after lunch, since this is when parents have time to concentrate on
other issues besides work.
To bring the issue to the administration I would send a survey to Latino parents with the intention to collect data on their attendance of school and students meetings, and reasons why they do not attend these important conferences. After collecting data and seeing the results, I would present this information to the administration with the proposal discussed above as well as with the multiple benefits that the
implementation of my plan would bring.
If my plan is implemented, I would immediately write a letter to ELs. parents notifying them about the service offered and how they can access it. I would also explain to them that the information given will be confidential and it will never be discussed with anybody except with the administration and their children’s teachers. I would also assure them that I and the administration will work to find the best
possible solution available to solve their problems.
I believe my plan is realistic and easy to put into practice. Also I feel positive about the outcome because if the plan is implemented, the students, parents and administration will be benefited from it.
